Metro53 - Islamabad (Web Desk): Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, has said that despite political differences, contacts and meetings are the beauty of the democratic process, and there is nothing wrong if Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif meets him.

He said such steps reflect political maturity and statesmanship, adding that ego and stubbornness must be set aside to move the country forward.

Mahmood Achakzai expressed these views while talking to the media after meeting Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman along with a delegation. During the meeting, detailed discussions were held on the country’s political situation, the democratic process, protest strategy, and prevailing circumstances.

Speaking to the media, Achakzai said that when political leaders sit together, discussions naturally revolve around politics, democracy, and national issues. He added that opposition parties have decided to adopt a democratic and peaceful course of protest under the current circumstances to avoid any kind of chaos.

Commenting on the prevailing terrorism situation, he said postponing public festivals like Basant was a correct decision, as the protection of human lives is of utmost importance. He stressed that as a nation, mistakes must be acknowledged and corrective steps should be taken while looking toward the future.

Achakzai further said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has met Maulana Fazlur Rehman several times in the past, so there is nothing unusual if he meets him again. He remarked that when political dialogue ends, problems worsen, therefore channels of communication should remain open.

On the other hand, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, while speaking on the occasion, said that his party stands by its position and does not accept the February 8 election results. He reiterated the demand for fresh and transparent elections so that the true mandate of the people can come to light.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that if his party announces a rally or procession at any place, it can also be cancelled keeping the situation in view. Criticizing the government, he said petitions filed by the opposition are still pending in courts and tribunals, while the government should openly acknowledge its failures.

Political analysts believe that such meetings among opposition leaders could play a significant role in shaping the direction of national politics in the coming days.
