Metro53 - Geneva: Alice Jill Edwards, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture, has called on the Pakistani government to take immediate and effective measures to end the reported inhumane and degrading conditions faced by former Prime Minister Imran Khan in custody. According to Edwards, such treatment may violate fundamental international human rights principles and constitute

In a statement posted on the UN website, Edwards stressed that all aspects of Khan’s detention must comply with international standards. Reports indicate that after being transferred to Adiala Jail in September 2023, Khan has been kept in prolonged solitary confinement, spending approximately 23 hours a day in his cell with extremely limited contact with the outside world. Continuous camera surveillance in his cell has further restricted his right to privacy.

Edwards highlighted that prolonged or indefinite solitary confinement is prohibited under international law, and confinement exceeding 15 days can be considered mental torture. She urged that Khan’s isolation be ended immediately, warning that it is not only unlawful but also poses serious risks to his health.

Reports also state that Khan is denied outdoor time, interaction with other prisoners, participation in congregational prayers, and often even meetings with lawyers, family members, and court-authorized individuals are interrupted. His cell is reportedly small, lacks natural light, has poor ventilation, and is affected by extreme temperatures, foul odors, and insects, contributing to medical issues such as nausea, vomiting, and significant weight loss.

Edwards emphasized that all detainees must be treated with human dignity, taking into account age, health, and physical needs, and must be provided with adequate rest, shelter, light, heat, and ventilation.

The 72-year-old former prime minister has pre-existing serious medical conditions, including a spinal injury from a 2013 accident and wounds from an assassination attempt in 2022. Reports indicate he has not been provided adequate medical care, prompting Edwards to demand immediate access for his personal doctors.

The UN official confirmed that Pakistani authorities have been engaged on this matter and that the situation remains under close monitoring.
