Metro53 - SKARDU/GUJRAT: Senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Qamar Zaman Kaira has expressed reservations regarding the conduct of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections and called upon the Gilgit-Baltistan Election Commission to take immediate notice of the issues raised.

In his reaction to the ongoing electoral process, Kaira alleged that polling stations in certain areas had been relocated to locations farther from voters, adversely affecting voter turnout and creating concerns about the transparency of the election process.

Objections Over Relocation of Polling Stations

The PPP leader claimed that several polling stations were shifted to places that were comparatively difficult for voters to access. According to him, the move affected voter participation and created additional difficulties for citizens seeking to cast their ballots.

He stressed that ensuring easy and equal access for every voter is a fundamental responsibility of election authorities and called for a thorough investigation into the matter.

Allegations of Delays in Polling Operations

Kaira also alleged that election staff at some polling stations failed to arrive on time, resulting in delays in the polling process.

He said such disruptions were inconsistent with the principles of free, fair and transparent elections and could potentially undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

Call for Immediate Action

The PPP leader urged the Gilgit-Baltistan Election Commission to examine the reported irregularities and take appropriate action wherever administrative shortcomings or violations are found.

He maintained that preserving the credibility of the electoral process requires that concerns raised by all political parties be addressed seriously and in accordance with the law.

Emphasis on Voters’ Rights

Kaira further emphasized that every eligible voter should be given a full opportunity to exercise their democratic right. He stated that election officials should continue facilitating the voting process until all voters present have cast their ballots.

Awaiting Official Response

The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections have witnessed intense competition among various political parties, while vote counting remains underway. Allegations concerning election administration and transparency have drawn significant political attention.

However, no formal response from the Election Commission or other relevant authorities had been issued regarding the allegations at the time of filing this report.
